Homer's Cave in İzmir attracts global interest

The Homer Valley in the Bornova district of İzmir, Turkey, is experiencing a surge in tourism and international interest following the success of director Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of the ‘Odyssey’. The valley, which follows the Bornova Stream, is traditionally believed to be the site where the ancient Greek poet Homer composed his epic works.

Archaeological and historical evidence supports the connection between the poet and the region. Ancient geographer Pausanias noted that a cave at the source of the Meles River was where Homer was said to have written his poems. Additionally, local findings, such as a bust at the Yeşilova Mound and ancient coins depicting Homer, suggest that the people of ancient Smyrna viewed the poet as one of their own.

This renewed global attention, highlighted by reports from international agencies like AFP, has turned the area into a significant cultural destination, blending natural beauty with ancient mythological heritage.
