Honda Access survey shows minivans dominate Japanese family long-distance trips

Honda Access commissioned a survey of 1,000 private‑car drivers aged 20 to 59 who have taken family trips of 100 km or more. The questionnaire was fielded on July 1‑2, 2026 with NetAgeia as the research partner.

The results indicate that minivans are the most popular vehicle body type for such journeys, chosen by 30.2% of respondents, followed by kei cars (19.4%), SUVs (16.5%), compact cars (15.6%) and sedans (7.3%). Among advanced driver‑assistance systems, lane‑keeping assist is installed in 38.3% of cars, cruise control (excluding ACC) in 32.5%, and adaptive cruise control (ACC) in 18.6%. On highways, 44% of ACC‑equipped drivers say they use it depending on road conditions or fatigue, while 38.1% report not using lane‑keeping assist at all.

A strong majority (66.5%) expressed a desire to undertake a family long‑distance drive this summer. About 39.5% said the lack of ETC holiday discounts during the Obon period and three‑day holidays affects their plans, and 54.8% adjust travel dates to take advantage of discount days. Traffic jams were the most common trouble reported (44.1% of those who experienced problems). Heat‑related measures such as sunshades and extra drinks were also highlighted.
