Honda admits Formula 1 power unit challenges with Aston Martin

Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) President Koji Watanabe has acknowledged that recent power unit upgrades intended to close the performance gap in Formula 1 have inadvertently impacted drivability. While the upgrades met power output targets for the second specification, changes to the combustion process caused drivability to regress toward levels experienced during the initial Spec 1 phase.

Watanabe admitted that Honda’s power unit is currently inferior to its competitors based on FIA performance data. The manufacturer is facing challenges with the complex hybrid regulations, specifically regarding power deficits, turbo lag, and unpredictable downshifts.

Despite these technical hurdles, Aston Martin has seen some improvement in mid-field competitiveness following chassis and engine updates, scoring six points in the last six races. Watanabe emphasized the need to continue refining hardware and software to address the power deficit and improve consistency.
