Honda and Nissan announce agreement to pursue merger by 2026
Honda and Nissan have announced an agreement to move toward a merger by 2026. This strategic consolidation aims to strengthen the competitive capabilities of the Japanese automakers against the rapid rise of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers and Tesla.
The merger seeks to address the massive capital and intellectual requirements of transitioning to electric vehicles and artificial intelligence. By combining forces, the entities could achieve a total revenue of $207 billion and a net profit of $20 billion.
Technically, the companies aim to complement each other's strengths: Honda possesses significant achievements in hybrid technology, while Nissan has a strong foundation in pure electric vehicles, notably through the Nissan Leaf. There is also potential for Mitsubishi to join the alliance, as Nissan currently holds approximately 24% of Mitsubishi's shares.
