Honda announces entry into e-MTB market with new prototype

Honda has officially confirmed its entry into the electric mountain bike (e-MTB) market, unveiling the Honda e-MTB Prototype at Sea Otter Europe in Girona. The company aims to launch its first commercial model by 2027.

The prototype features a high-end carbon fiber frame developed in collaboration with Rotwild, which will handle manufacturing while Honda manages design and development. The design serves as a tribute to the brand’s legendary RN01 downhill bike from the early 2000s.

Technical specifications for the prototype include a Shimano EP8 motor integrated into the bottom bracket and a semi-integrated Fox suspension system. While the current concept utilizes Shimano components, the final production version may feature different drive systems or proprietary battery technology to accommodate unique frame geometries.
