Honda replaces F1 engine chief amid Aston Martin struggles

Honda Racing Corporation has announced a leadership change within its Formula 1 power unit development programme. Effective October 1, Yoichiro Fukao will succeed Tetsushi Kakuda as the Large Project Leader.

Fukao, who currently serves as the deputy leader and head of the software division, has been involved with Honda’s F1 programme since 2002. Kakuda previously led the development of the power units that powered Red Bull to four consecutive world titles.

The restructuring comes during a challenging debut season for the Honda and Aston Martin partnership. The team has struggled with performance and reliability, currently sitting near the bottom of the constructors’ championship. Issues reported include severe engine vibrations and a significant power deficit compared to top competitors.

Honda stated the move is a planned succession intended to “ensure the reliable transfer of technical expertise to the next generation of engineers.” The company aims to establish a robust development framework to prepare for upcoming technical regulation changes in 2026 and 2027.
