Honda-Aston Martin Formula 1 partnership plagued by engine vibrations

Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe confirmed that the new turbo‑hybrid power unit supplied to Aston Martin is suffering from severe technical problems, including catastrophic vibrations and a noticeable performance shortfall. The difficulties stem from a combination of new 2024 regulations, a disrupted development period after Honda withdrew from F1 at the end of 2021, and challenges integrating the engine with the Aston Martin chassis.

Aston Martin currently sits near the back of the constructors’ standings, with only a single point after the Monaco Grand Prix. Honda has worked with its Japanese dyno facility and the team to eliminate the vibration issue and is now concentrating on performance upgrades ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. The partnership also involves new suppliers – fuel from Aramco and lubricants from Valvoline – and Honda remains the only engine maker not yet endorsing the forthcoming 2027‑2028 regulation package.

Both parties say open dialogue and step‑by‑step improvements are key to restoring competitiveness for the remainder of the 2024 season.
