Honda develops wireless charging technology for electric vehicles
Honda is developing a wireless energy transfer system designed to charge electric vehicles while they are in motion. By installing specialized transmitter coils beneath the road surface, the technology creates an electromagnetic field that sends power to receiver hardware located on the underside of a vehicle, eliminating the need for physical cable connections.
In collaboration with Japanese construction firms Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec, the project aims to reduce range anxiety and minimize time spent at stationary charging stations. If successful, this technology could allow vehicles to operate with smaller batteries.
The development process focuses initially on electric vehicles used in the logistics and transportation sectors. A dedicated test road is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with real-world road testing scheduled to begin in early 2027. These tests will evaluate energy transfer efficiency at high speeds, electromagnetic safety, and the durability of the infrastructure under heavy usage.
