Honda develops wireless charging technology for electric vehicles in motion

Honda, in partnership with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec, has developed a dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) system designed to charge electric vehicles while they are in motion. The technology uses magnetic coupling to transfer energy from coils embedded in the road surface to a receiver installed on the vehicle.

To reduce installation complexity and costs, Honda has developed a system where the inverter and coil are integrated into compact modules within the road. This allows the infrastructure to be powered by direct current (DC), simplifying wiring and maintenance. The system is designed to support high-power delivery, with capabilities reaching up to 150 kW, making it suitable for large commercial vehicles.

Initial testing on a private track has successfully demonstrated that the infrastructure can withstand the weight and traffic of 20-ton vehicles. Looking ahead, the partners plan to build a new test track by the end of 2026 to conduct long-term durability tests. Public road demonstrations are scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2027, including participation in the 'Tateyama Project' on the Tateyama Expressway in Japan, where Toyota will also participate in testing a 300-meter section.
