Honda develops wireless charging technology for moving electric vehicles

Honda, in collaboration with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation, has developed foundational technology for a wireless charging road system designed to power electric vehicles (EVs) while they are in motion. The system utilizes magnetic coupling technology, featuring power-transmitting units embedded in the road surface and a receiver unit installed on the vehicle.

The technology is being developed to support a wide range of mobility, from passenger cars to large commercial vehicles. Current testing has validated that the road structure and embedded units can withstand the weight of commercial vehicles approximately 20 tonnes. Future development aims to achieve high-power output of up to 150 kW and ensure reliability during high-speed driving.

Honda intends to focus initially on the logistics and transportation sectors, where continuous operation is critical. Public road demonstrations in Japan are scheduled to begin during the 2027 fiscal year, with specific plans to participate in the ‘Tateyama Project’ on the Tateyama Expressway in Chiba Prefecture. This technology could potentially allow for smaller, lighter, and less expensive EV batteries by reducing the reliance on stationary charging stops.
