Honda reconsidering North American factory plans amid USMCA uncertainty
Honda Motor Co. is reconsidering plans for an eighth assembly plant in North America, citing uncertainty surrounding the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Executive Vice President Noriya Kaihara stated that while the company is approaching full production capacity and needs new facilities, a final decision on investment will depend on whether the trade pact is extended.
The automaker is undergoing a strategic shift, pivoting away from aggressive electric vehicle (EV) targets toward a focus on hybrid models. Honda plans to launch 15 new hybrid models by 2030 to meet rising consumer demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. This shift follows a decision to scale back previous EV ambitions and cancel several planned electric models in the U.S.
Trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada have added complexity to the decision. The U.S. recently imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian products, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. Honda noted that it is currently absorbing these tariff costs to avoid passing them on to North American customers. The company expects to reach a definitive investment decision within the next one to two years, with a target production start date around 2030.
