Honda partners with Tata Technologies to revamp Indian market strategy
Honda Motor has entered a partnership with Tata Technologies to overhaul its strategy in the Indian market. The collaboration aims to reduce development costs by up to 20% and halve the current five-year product development cycle.
The move comes as Honda faces significant financial pressure, including projected electric vehicle-related losses exceeding $12 billion. The company is seeking to save more than $9 billion in costs over the next four years. This strategic shift follows a decline in Honda’s Indian market share, which has dropped from 7.3% to 1.3% amid competition from local manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra.
Under the outsourcing agreement, Tata Technologies will assist in designing vehicles specifically for India. The first project is expected to be a small SUV, slated for launch in 2028, followed by a mid-size SUV. The decision to outsource reportedly followed internal disagreements between Honda’s Japanese and Indian management teams regarding supplier selection.
