Honda RC166: The high-revving 6-cylinder racing motorcycle

The Honda RC166, a legendary racing motorcycle developed in the 1960s, is noted for its unique engineering and intense sound. Designed to compete in the 250cc class of the World Grand Prix, the machine utilized a highly precise six-cylinder engine to achieve the high RPMs necessary for competitiveness.

Because four-stroke engines traditionally produce power every second revolution, Honda engineers divided the 250cc displacement into six miniature cylinders to reach speeds of 18,000 rpm without damaging the pistons or valvetrain. This intricate construction resulted in a ferocious roar that has been known to cause crowds to cover their ears. Beyond its auditory impact, the RC166 was highly successful on the track, notably ridden by legendary racer Mike ‘The Bike’ Hailwood.
