Honda targets $9.4 billion in cost savings to counter Chinese EV competition

Honda Motor Co. has launched a major cost-reduction initiative aiming to save 1.5 trillion yen (approximately $9.4 billion) by 2030. This strategy is designed to restore competitiveness against rapidly expanding Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD.

The automaker is pressuring suppliers to achieve up to 30% cost reductions in three key areas: pressed and forged components, electrical parts, and equipment for software-defined vehicles (SDV). To improve efficiency, Honda plans to increase the use of standardized parts and expand its procurement of components from Chinese suppliers.

This financial recalibration follows significant challenges in Honda's electrification strategy, with the company expecting its EV-related losses to eventually exceed $12 billion. In a separate move to bolster its technological capabilities, Honda and Nissan announced a partnership to jointly develop a standardized electronic control unit for software-defined vehicles, with a target launch in fiscal year 2029.
