Honda to debut upgraded F1 power unit with Aston Martin

Honda is preparing to debut its upgraded B-spec Formula 1 power unit with Aston Martin at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. Following a difficult start to the 2026 season, the Japanese manufacturer is focusing heavily on improving internal combustion engine performance to close the gap with competitors.

Chief Engineer Shintaro Orihara revealed that the technical refinements include a redesigned pre-chamber to accelerate combustion, an altered piston shape for better combustion quality, and modifications to the lubrication system to reduce friction. While rumors suggested a potential gain of up to 50bhp, Orihara downplayed these figures, stating that while they have met internal targets, the rumored number is likely too high.

The engine upgrade follows a significant chassis update from Aston Martin, designed by Adrian Newey, which showed promise at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite the chassis improvements, the power unit remains a critical area of focus, as the team seeks to move from the back of the pack into the midfield. The upcoming races in Zandvoort and Monza will serve as key tests for the new engine's effectiveness.
