Honduran Ambassador Cossette López Blasts CIDH Over 2025 Election Crisis

Cossette López, former president of Honduras' National Electoral Council (CNE) and now ambassador to the OAS, publicly accused the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) of ignoring protection requests from electoral officials during the 2025 Honduran electoral crisis. She said the CIDH repeatedly rejected petitions from the CNE and the Electoral Justice Tribunal (TJE) that alleged attacks on democratic institutions. "¿Cómo es que ahora sí se abre la discusión sobre la independencia judicial y la autonomía de autoridades electorales, cuando en plena crisis fueron rechazadas una tras otra las solicitudes…?", she asked.

López released a video titled “Blindaje de la Verdad Histórica” featuring footage and testimonies from the crisis, questioning why the CIDH now opens a debate on judicial independence and electoral autonomy after having dismissed those earlier complaints. Analysts noted the remarks sparked debate over her diplomatic suitability and could affect Honduras’ stance in regional forums.
