Honduran Armed Forces prepare to support new anti-crime strategies

The Honduran Armed Forces have declared their readiness to comply with any resolutions passed by the Council of Defense and Security regarding potential new strategies to combat criminal organizations. Héctor Benjamín Valerio Ardón, Chief of the Joint Staff, stated that the military is prepared to support the state with all available personnel and logistics to ensure public welfare.

A key component of the proposed measures is the potential implementation of a state of exception, which could involve the temporary suspension or restriction of certain constitutional guarantees, such as freedom of movement and assembly. Valerio noted that the Military Public Order Police (PMOP) would serve as the primary institution allowing military personnel to operate with authorities similar to those of the National Police.

While authorities are evaluating these security measures to address persistent crime and organized structures, the possibility of a state of exception has drawn mixed reactions. Civil society groups have expressed concerns regarding the suspension of constitutional rights, while government officials view it as a necessary tool for combating criminality. The military is also prepared to analyze budgetary needs for increased resources for the PMOP as operations evolve.
