Honduran child and adolescent violence kills over 1,300 in 78 months

The National Human Rights Commission of Honduras reported that between 2020 and June 2026, 1,330 children and adolescents were killed in violent incidents, averaging 17 deaths per month or one every 43 hours. About 75 % of the victims were aged 15‑18, and the deaths represent 6.45 % of all violent homicides in the country during that period. The four departments of Francisco Morazán, Cortés, Olancho and Yoro accounted for 58 % of these killings.

A separate report from the Coordinadora de Instituciones Privadas Pro las Niñas, Niños, Adolescentes, Jóvenes y sus Derechos (Coiproden) noted that in the first half of 2026, 320 adolescents and young people were murdered, a 15 % increase over the same period in 2025, with 80 % of those victims being youths and 20 % children. An additional 129 deaths were linked to road accidents. Both agencies called for urgent, coordinated prevention measures and stronger protection for minors.

The reports emphasize systemic impunity, weak investigations, and the need for an inter‑institutional, multidimensional strategy to safeguard children and adolescents in Honduras.
