Honduran delegation to Washington to defend political trials at IACHR
An inter‑institutional delegation from Honduras, composed of representatives of the National Congress, the Attorney General’s Office and the Foreign Ministry, will travel to Washington on 5 August to appear before the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The mission will argue that the political trials of former officials – including former Attorney General Johel Zelaya – were conducted in full compliance with the Constitution and applicable laws, and that due‑process guarantees such as notification, the right to present evidence and the right to defence were respected.
Congress President Tomás Zambrano reiterated that the legislative chamber ensured all procedural safeguards, while Zelaya has filed an amparo petition against his removal. The delegation says its defence will be based on official acts, statutes, testimonies and gathered documentation, and it seeks to demonstrate that no international sanctions against Honduras are justified.
