Mexico public health services report 60% increase in specialty consultations

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported significant growth in the country's public health services, specifically within the IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS Bienestar institutions. Between January and July of 2022 and the same period in 2026, specialty medical consultations increased by 60%, rising from approximately 19.76 million to 31.71 million.

General medical consultations also saw a 28% increase, growing from 82.9 million in 2023 to over 101 million in 2026. Additionally, scheduled surgeries rose by 30%, from 1.45 million in 2022 to 1.88 million in 2026. The IMSS specifically aims to reach 2.2 million surgeries by the end of 2026.

Infrastructure improvements have accompanied these service increases. The government has inaugurated 32 new hospitals and intends to reach a total of 39 by the end of the year. The IMSS Bienestar system has shown particularly high growth, with specialty consultations increasing by 90% across its 24 federalized states.
