Honduran households rely heavily on foreign remittances
Approximately 670,000 households in Honduras receive remittances from abroad, with 45% of these families relying on these funds as their primary source of income, according to data from the Central Bank of Honduras cited by the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ).
Analysis shows that 62% of recipient households receive these funds monthly. The departments of Francisco Morazán and Cortés concentrate the highest flows, with amounts ranging between $377 million and $512 million. While these funds reach rural migration-heavy areas, they are also significant in major urban centers.
Regarding usage, 80% of remittances are directed toward daily consumption, while only 4% goes to savings and 3% to investments. Within households, mothers are the primary recipients at 40%, followed by siblings at 18%, while children and parents each account for 11%.
The ASJ expressed concern regarding the potential end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans, noting that a mass return of migrants could strain the local labor market and highlight the country's need for more formal, sustainable employment.
