Paraguay medical strike intensifies over salary and supply demands
Medical professionals in Paraguay are engaged in a national strike, demanding significant salary increases, better working conditions, and improved hospital supplies. The National Medical Union (Sinamed) is seeking to raise the salary for 12-hour contracts from 5 million to 8 million Guaraníes. Additionally, the union is calling for the permanent appointment of contracted staff and the provision of essential medicines.
The government, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Public Health, has stated that the requested 30% salary increase is financially unfeasible, estimating a cost of USD 128 million. Officials have proposed alternatives such as implementing a medical career ladder (escalafón) and providing incentives for specialists rather than a linear salary hike.
The crisis has escalated with threats of mass resignations from pediatric surgeons and the movement of protests to Encarnación during the World Rally Championship to increase visibility. While the Senate and Chamber of Deputies have attempted to mediate, no formal agreement has been reached, and the strike remains active.
