Honduran rice sector agrees on production and price measures
Rice producers, agro-industry representatives, and Honduran government authorities have reached an agreement to strengthen national production and commercialization. A key component of the deal is a guaranteed price of 545 lempiras per quintal, effective from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. Additionally, the agro-industry has committed to purchasing 100% of the national harvest.
To support farmers against climate challenges, Banadesa will offer financing and refinancing at a preferential 7% interest rate with terms of nine to 12 months. The government will also cover 80% of the cost of agricultural insurance, with producers paying the remaining 20%. Furthermore, the Association of Rice Millers of Honduras (ANAMH) announced a fund of 6 to 7 million lempiras to provide improved seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural technology.
Authorities aim to increase national production by 20% to 25%, targeting a range of 500,000 to 700,000 quintals compared to the previous year's 450,000 quintals. As part of sector organization, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) will implement a unique identification card for producers featuring a QR code to track location, cultivated area, and production data.
