Honduran shrimp industry reports stable production amid market and climate challenges

Benigno Rodríguez, representative of Granja Marina del Sur, told a meeting with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) that the shrimp sector in southern Honduras continues to show favorable production indicators. Despite market difficulties and climatic conditions, output remains stable compared with the previous year.

Rodríguez said the industry generates between $230 million and $270 million in foreign‑exchange earnings annually, supports roughly 20,000 direct jobs and about 100,000 indirect jobs, and is a key economic driver for the region. Production is concentrated in the departments of Choluteca and Valle, especially in the municipality of Marcovia. The sector depends on water conditions in the Gulf of Fonseca, with high temperatures potentially affecting oxygen levels, but current indicators are comparable or better than last year.
