Honduran Social Security Institute cuts surgical backlog to 1,000 cases

The Instituto Hondureño de Seguridad Social (IHSS) announced that its surgical backlog fell from more than 6,000 cases to roughly 1,000, a reduction attributed by director Víctor Martínez to institutional efforts and the availability of medical supplies.

The Hospital de Especialidades alone performed over 4,251 surgeries during this period, and the IHSS reports that it is executing 100 % of the appointments that are available. Nevertheless, patients continue to complain about limited specialist availability and long waiting times. Martínez said the institute may consider subcontracting services to speed up care and is working on a data‑system to pinpoint specialties with the greatest unmet demand, aiming to redirect resources accordingly.
