Honduran Social Security Institute reaches 86% drug supply, doctors demand health minister

The director of the Instituto Hondureño de Seguridad Social (IHSS), Víctor Martínez, told media that the institution’s hospitals are currently stocked at about 86 % of required medicines and that the figure is expected to rise to 90‑92 % by September. He said the supply in storage facilities is already above 70 % and that a recent international procurement process with the United Nations is helping to close remaining gaps, especially for oncology drugs.

Doctors’ representatives, led by Ricardo Rojas of the IHSS Doctors’ Association, acknowledged improvements such as reduced surgical backlogs but warned that the health system still lacks sufficient hospital beds and specialist staff. They called on President Nasry Asfura to appoint a dedicated minister of health to address the ongoing crisis and improve overall service quality.
