Honduran Supreme Court magistrate seeks budget for specialized courts

Walter Raúl Miranda Sabio, a magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) and coordinator of the Criminal Chamber, has called for an increased budget to establish specialized courts to address violence against women. This proposal follows a rise in femicides and other violent deaths, with the goal of providing a more effective and specialized judicial response across all 18 departments of the country.

Miranda Sabio also highlighted progress made by the Judiciary since 2023 through the 'Mesa de Desinternamiento'. Working alongside the Public Ministry, the Attorney General's Office, and the National Penitentiary Institute, the Judiciary has focused on improving health services and documentation for incarcerated individuals. These efforts aim to better understand the prison population and facilitate special circumstances, such as allowing terminally ill inmates to spend their final days with family.

The magistrate warned that creating new judicial bodies will directly impact the Judiciary's finances, necessitating additional resources. He also urged investigative and prevention agencies to fulfill their duties to ensure perpetrators of crimes against women are brought to justice.
