Honduran Supreme Court to consider Romeo Vásquez Velásquez appeal

The full bench of the Supreme Court of Justice in Honduras may rule next week on an appeal filed by the defense of retired general Romeo Vásquez Velásquez. Criminal Chamber magistrate Walter Miranda stated that the case, which was presented in January 2025, has been studied and its inclusion in the upcoming session depends on the final agenda.

The appeal was moved to the full bench of 15 magistrates after the Constitutional Chamber failed to reach a consensus. The defense seeks to overturn a previous ruling by the Court of Appeals of Francisco Morazán, which revoked the general's house arrest and ordered him to face proceedings under preventive detention.

Vásquez Velásquez is facing criminal charges related to the death of Isy Obed Murillo and the attempted murder of Alex Roberto Zavala during the 2009 political crisis. Until a resolution is reached, the existing arrest warrant remains in effect.
