Honduran teacher video misattributed to Colombian school debunked

A video showing a teacher slapping a student was circulated online with claims that it depicted a teacher from the Colombian teachers' union Fecode in Piedecuesta. Fact‑checking revealed the footage was recorded on July 9 at the Centro de Educación Básica República de Cuba in the community of Nueva Esperanza, Morazán, Yoro, Honduras. The teacher, identified as Perla Díaz, was detained by Honduran police and is being investigated for degrading treatment. The false attribution linked the incident to political commentary about Abelardo de la Espriella’s campaign remarks on education policy, but the video has no connection to Colombia.

The clip spread on X, Facebook and Instagram, accumulating over 218 000 views, and was shared by media outlets in Honduras and elsewhere. Verification by AFP Factual and La Silla Vacía confirmed the video's Honduran origin and the misrepresentation of the teacher’s affiliation.
