Honduran women demand greater political representation

Social organizations and female leaders in Honduras are calling for greater political participation to achieve full democracy. During the ‘South-South Exchange of Women Politicians’ and the ‘Nosotras Construyendo Democracia’ project, representatives highlighted a significant gap between the female population and their representation in decision-making roles.

In Honduras, women constitute 54% of the population and the electoral roll, yet they remain a minority in power. In the 2025 elections, only 38 of the 128 seats in the National Congress were held by women—less than 30%. Furthermore, only 23 of the country's 298 municipalities are led by women, leaving 275 local governments headed by men.

Organizers noted that inequality persists through various barriers, including discretionary party dynamics, unequal access to financing, gender-based political violence, and disproportionate caregiving responsibilities.
