Honduras and Ecuador see deadly attacks on women, underscoring gender violence

A woman was found dead with multiple stab wounds, including a fatal neck injury, in the La Pista neighborhood of Catacamas, Olancho, Honduras. The killing adds to more than 160 women murdered in Honduras this year, prompting calls for stronger prevention and justice measures.

In Ecuador, a court in Tungurahua sentenced two men to 34 years and 8 months in prison for the murder and dismemberment of 23‑year‑old veterinary student Alison Altamirino Poveda. The tribunal also opened an investigation into possible procedural fraud at the crime scene. The verdict was welcomed by the victim’s family as a step toward accountability.

Both cases highlight the persistent problem of gender‑based violence in Latin America and the differing responses—ongoing investigations in Honduras and a maximum prison sentence in Ecuador.
