Honduras approves national policy to address housing deficit
The Council of Ministers in Honduras has approved the National Housing and Human Settlements Policy via an executive decree. This long-term strategy aims to address a national housing deficit estimated at 1.6 million units.
Francis Argeñal, head of the Secretariat of Housing and Human Settlements (SEVIAH), stated that the scale of the deficit requires a sustained effort that transcends a single presidential term. The policy seeks to foster collaboration between public institutions, private companies, and financial entities to expand access to housing solutions.
The housing gap is categorized into two main needs: 40 percent involves the construction of new homes, while the remaining 60 percent consists of existing structures requiring repairs or improvements. The government has projected the construction of approximately 550,000 new homes and the renovation of 750,000 units over a 15-year period.
