Honduras basic basket price surge outpaces wages, raising poverty and migration risk

The cost of Honduras' basic consumer basket has risen to 16,700 lempiras, surpassing the minimum wage range of 12,000‑14,000 lempiras. The Defensoría de los Consumidores (Defco) monitors 150 essential products and reports that the price increase erodes purchasing power for thousands of households.

Economist Wilfredo Girón of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras warned that the continued rise, driven by higher oil prices, reduced subsidies and energy rationing under President Nasry Asfura, will push more families into poverty and could force many Hondurans to migrate in search of better livelihoods.
