Honduras buries 26 unclaimed bodies in dignified ceremony
The Municipal District Central of Tegucigalpa, in coordination with the Directorate of Forensic Medicine and Sciences, conducted a humanitarian burial for 26 people whose remains had been stored in the Ministry of Public's morgue since April‑June. The bodies, many unidentified and including seven newborns and fetuses, were interred at the Jardín de los Ángeles cemetery after the city provided coffins, cemetery space and logistical support.
The operation, described as the third unclaimed‑body burial of the year, covered cases from the central, southern and eastern regions of Honduras. Officials emphasized the act as a matter of respect and humanity for individuals who died without family claimants, noting that most were buried as "unknown" due to the lack of identification through fingerprints, dental records or DNA, which require family participation.
