Honduras closes Strategic Planning Secretariat after staff liquidation
The Strategic Planning Secretariat in Honduras is undergoing a definitive closure this Friday following the complete liquidation of its workforce. Leonel Núñez, a member of the liquidation commission, confirmed that the final 18 employees will conclude their duties, settling the institution's labor liabilities and allowing for the cancellation of employer registrations and administrative codes.
The Secretariat operated with a budget of 1,695 million lempiras. While this entity is nearly fully closed, the commission noted that the Secretariat of Transparency is nearing its own closure, and programs such as Marca País and the Honduran Institute of Cinematography have already ceased operations. Other entities, including the Secretariat of Social Development (Sedesol) and the FOSOVI program, require more time due to administrative complexities.
During the liquidation process, officials reported potential irregularities regarding the management of public funds. Núñez highlighted a case involving a migrant assistance program under Sedesol, where six checks of two million lempiras each were reportedly issued through Banadesa in January 2026. Additionally, it was noted that an individual allegedly received over 14 million lempiras via checks that were subsequently converted to cash without clear justification for the funds.
