Honduras Confronts Surge in Unsolved Femicides Amid Celebration of Garifuna Women

Since 2002, more than 8,540 women have been murdered in Honduras, with over 95 % of cases remaining impunity, according to the National Human Rights Commission (Conadeh). The commission’s head, Blanca Izaguirre, urged the government to adopt reinforced due‑diligence investigations, comprehensive public policies and adequate budgeting to protect women and end structural violence.

In a separate event, over 100 Garifuna women were honored for contributions in health, education, economy, culture, art and sport during the International Day of Afro‑Latina, Afro‑Caribbean and Diaspora Women. The ceremony, organized by the Plataforma de Mujeres Garífunas de Éxito and led by Jade Martínez, highlighted the leadership and cultural identity of Afro‑descendant women in Honduras.

Both developments underscore the stark contrast between ongoing gender‑based violence and efforts to recognize and empower women in Honduran society.
