Honduras DNVT reports over 26,000 traffic sanctions in 2026
The National Directorate of Roads and Transport (DNVT) in Honduras has sanctioned more than 26,000 drivers for traffic law violations so far in 2026. Jairo Ramos, the DNVT regional chief for the northern zone, reported that approximately 2,200 of these individuals were caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities noted that the increase in sanctions is due to enhanced operational presence, additional personnel, and new strategies aimed at reducing road accidents and fatalities. The enforcement efforts have specifically targeted public transportation following citizen reports regarding dangerous driving behaviors, such as running red lights, driving on sidewalks, and overcrowding vehicles. Recently, six transport units were seized following reports of hazardous maneuvers.
In addition to standard fines, the DNVT is utilizing toxicological testing through the Road Safety Brigade. These operations, supported by medical specialists, aim to enforce stricter compliance and have reportedly influenced company owners to improve safety standards to avoid vehicle seizures and further penalties from the Honduran Institute of Land Transportation.
