Honduras Election Cycle Marked by Surge in Press Attacks

During Honduras's 2025‑2026 election period, the Committee for Free Expression (C‑Libre) recorded 50 politically motivated attacks on journalists, media workers and commentators. The incidents spanned the pre‑electoral phase, the November 30, 2025 voting day and the two months following the vote, when disputes over results and the transition intensified.

The majority of cases involved direct violence – threats, intimidation, physical assaults and harassment – with 60 % classified as such. About 58 % of the attacks aimed to censor independent reporting and 38 % sought to silence critical voices. State actors, including government officials, military personnel and party supporters, were identified as the principal alleged perpetrators. Female journalists faced gender‑based political violence intended to undermine their professional legitimacy and push them out of the public sphere.

C‑Libre warned that these attacks reflect a broader pattern of intolerance toward scrutiny of public officials, inhibiting press freedom and the public’s right to receive independent information.
