Honduras electoral reform debates focus on polling boards and runoffs
Debates regarding electoral reforms in Honduras are intensifying, focusing on reducing political party influence over polling stations and enhancing government legitimacy through a potential second-round voting system.
The National Anti-Corruption Council (CNA) has urged the National Congress to reach a consensus on 'citizenizing' the Juntas Receptoras de Votos (JRV). The CNA noted that various sectors—including the Electoral Reform Proposal Table, former members of the National Electoral Council (CNE), and the National Party caucus—share the goal of decreasing partisan intervention in the formation of these voting boards.
Additionally, Liberal Party deputy Jorge Cálix has advocated for the implementation of a second-round runoff to strengthen the legitimacy of elected officials. Cálix argued that a runoff could prevent the legitimacy issues seen in previous elections where narrow margins led to allegations of fraud, noting that a broader mandate would provide winners with more stability to execute their agendas.
