Honduras experiences violent Sunday with seven deaths
A wave of violence across Honduras resulted in at least seven deaths on Sunday, August 9, involving various incidents in the regions of Olancho, El Paraíso, and Cortés.
In Olancho, a confrontation in the El Tigre sector of Lepaguare left two people dead: National Police agent Luis Humberto Licona Salgado and a civilian identified as Cristopher Colindres. Reports indicate the confrontation began after police responded to a call regarding domestic violence.
In the community of Piedras Amarillas, Campamento, armed individuals entered a residence and killed a father and son, identified as German Alonzo Torres, 64, and Jerson Uriel Alonzo Juárez, 33. One woman was wounded in the attack.
Additional fatalities were reported in Teupasenti, El Paraíso, where Junior Evandro Soto Fonseca, known as “Chune,” was shot and killed. According to data from the Observatory of Violence of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (ONV-UNAH), the country averages approximately six homicides per day.
