Honduras faces climate risks and water deficits

Climate change expert César Quintanilla has warned that Honduras is facing irregular rainfall and a water deficit that could worsen through the end of 2026 and into 2027. He noted that while tropical waves still trigger rain, the frequency and duration are no longer sufficient to replenish water sources or support agriculture, largely due to the effects of El Niño.

In response to these climate risks, Silvio Larios, executive director of the Honduran Chamber of the Construction Industry (CHICO), is calling for better urban planning and organized growth. Larios warned that following prolonged droughts, upcoming rains may arrive in short, intense bursts that pose significant risks to the population. He urged the private sector to take responsibility for safety and called on emergency agencies like Copeco to remain vigilant, noting that national resources may be insufficient to cover the entire territory during major emergencies.
