Salvador Nasralla faces massive fine over campaign fund irregularities
Salvador Nasralla, a former presidential candidate for the Liberal Party in Honduras, has admitted to depositing campaign contributions into a personal bank account. Nasralla stated that some business donors required the funds to be kept separate from official party accounts to facilitate the collection process.
The Unidad de Política Limpia (UFTF) has imposed a fine of 146.4 million lempiras, approximately $5.42 million, due to administrative irregularities. The sanctions involve the failure to timely report 21 private contributions that exceeded 120 minimum wages, alongside inconsistencies in reported versus actual funds.
Roberto Contreras, president of the Liberal Party's Central Executive Council, has questioned the financial reports and announced a party session next week to address the inconsistencies. Nasralla has rejected the allegations of wrongdoing, characterizing the sanctions as a political attempt to disqualify him from the 2029 elections.
