Honduras faces surge in child murders and fake kidnappings

The Honduran National Human Rights Commissioner reported that between January 2020 and June 2026, 1,330 children and adolescents were killed violently, averaging 17 victims per month and accounting for 6.45 % of all homicides. Adolescents aged 15‑18 comprised 75 % of the deaths, with the highest annual total of 249 in 2021. The departments of Francisco Morazán, Cortés, Olancho and Yoro recorded 58 % of the killings, underscoring weaknesses in state protection mechanisms and high levels of impunity.

In 2026, the Dirección Policial de Investigaciones documented eight cases of "autosecuestros" – self‑kidnappings – primarily in Cortés department, especially around San Pedro Sula. Authorities said these falsified abductions divert police resources and are punishable by six months to two years in prison and substantial fines. Analysts linked the phenomenon to economic hardship, emotional distress, and attempts to secure ransom money for migration routes to the United States.
