Honduras human rights groups demand justice for journalists and the disappeared
The Honduran NGO Comité por la Libre Expresión (C-Libre) has called on the families of approximately 100 journalists who have been murdered or disappeared in Honduras since 2001 to form a collective network. The proposed ‘Red de Familiares por la Memoria, la Verdad y la Justicia’ aims to provide a safe space for organization, psychosocial support, and legal assistance to help families seek truth and combat impunity.
According to the National Commissioner for Human Rights (Conadeh), 103 media professionals—including journalists, broadcasters, photographers, and editors—have died in the country between October 2001 and June 2025. Data indicates that 88% of these crimes remain unpunished.
In a separate human rights action, the Committee of Relatives of the Disappeared in Honduras (COFADEH) held a monthly protest to demand justice for the disappeared. During the demonstration, COFADEH denounced armed repression by police forces in the department of Cortés, alleging the use of live ammunition and tear gas against protesters. The group also criticized the criminalization of social activists and expressed concerns regarding the national Penal Code.
