Honduras: UN and activists demand justice two years after Juan López murder

Two years after the murder of environmental defender Juan López in Tocoa, international and local organizations are calling for justice and increased protection for human rights defenders in Honduras.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OACNUDH) has urged the Honduran state to implement effective measures to prevent future attacks on activists. While acknowledging recent progress in judicial investigations, the UN emphasized the need for rigorous, independent, and exhaustive processes to ensure all responsible parties are held criminally liable. The UN also stressed the importance of strengthening the autonomy of the Public Ministry and judicial independence.

Gabriela Castellanos, director of the National Anti-Corruption Council (CNA), criticized the current state of the justice system, stating that the lack of convictions reflects a growing culture of impunity and a loss of institutional strength. Similarly, the Council Civic of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) noted setbacks in the legal process, including the recent granting of house arrest to two individuals accused of being intellectual authors of the crime.

Local leaders and religious figures continue to demand truth and reparation for López, who was a prominent advocate for the protection of the Carlos Escaleras Mejia National Park and local water resources.
