Honduras implements road safety checks and defends security model

During the Morazánico holiday, the Honduran National Police have seized at least 550 driver's licenses as part of road safety operations. More than 270 checkpoints have been deployed, particularly in the northwestern region, to monitor major highways. Authorities are conducting sobriety and anti-doping tests to prevent accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

Separately, Gerzon Velásquez, the Secretary of Security, addressed comparisons between Honduras and El Salvador regarding public safety. Velásquez highlighted that Honduras faces unique challenges, including a lower police-to-citizen ratio—one officer for every 436 inhabitants compared to one for every 200 in El Salvador. He emphasized that Honduras must develop a security model tailored to its specific geography, social conditions, and its history as a transit route for drug trafficking across its 850 kilometers of coastline.
