Honduras investment climate shows potential despite structural obstacles
The U.S. Department of State has released its 2026 Investment Climate Statement for Honduras, highlighting a mix of strategic advantages and persistent structural challenges. The report notes a favorable shift in perception toward private investment following the inauguration of President Nasry Asfura on January 27, 2026.
Key competitive advantages identified include Honduras's proximity to the United States, access to natural resources, the deep-water capabilities of Puerto Cortés, and trade protections provided by CAFTA-DR. Additionally, the country's macroeconomic stability and its ongoing program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are cited as positive factors. The Honduran economy grew by 3.8% in 2025, with growth for 2026 projected between 3% and 4%.
However, the report warns of significant obstacles that continue to deter large-scale foreign capital. These include corruption, security concerns, bureaucratic hurdles, energy supply instability, and land tenure disputes. While the current administration has taken steps toward legal certainty—such as managing re-entry into the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and implementing new part-time employment regulations—the U.S. analysis emphasizes that reforms in governance, transparency, and administrative simplification are necessary to consolidate a productive investment environment. Currently, more than 200 U.S. companies maintain operations in the country, primarily in manufacturing, textiles, and auto parts.
