Honduras: Jorge Zelaya criticizes President Asfura over frequent foreign trips

Former National Party deputy Jorge Zelaya has criticized Honduran President Nasry Asfura regarding the frequency of his international travels. Zelaya argued that the president should prioritize addressing the economic and social needs of the Honduran population rather than engaging in frequent trips that lack visible results.

Zelaya specifically questioned the benefits of recent visits to Spain, Italy, Washington, and Miami. He noted that during a meeting with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the president could have addressed the situation of Hondurans protected by Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Zelaya stated that while official visits are acceptable if they secure investments or social projects, the current pattern of travel lacks tangible outcomes for the citizens.

In response to the upcoming travel schedule, Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero confirmed that President Asfura will attend the XXX Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, Spain, on November 4 and 5, 2026. The summit will include representatives from 22 countries and cover topics such as trade, investment, artificial intelligence, and international cooperation. Honduras is also set to host the following Ibero-American Summit in 2028.
