Honduras launches first national census in 13 years to guide public policy

The Honduran government officially launched the XVIII National Census of Population and the VII National Census of Housing on 5 August 2026, marking the first comprehensive demographic count since 2013. President of the Republic Nasry Asfura and President of the National Congress Tomás Zambrano attended the ceremony, presented the methodology for data collection across the country's 298 municipalities and unveiled the official attire for the 1,200‑14,000 census takers who will visit roughly 2.6 million households.

The census is funded by the Inter‑American Development Bank and receives technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Officials say the updated statistics will be used to plan health, education, infrastructure and rural development policies, and to allocate resources more effectively for the current and future administrations.
