Honduras security intensifies following terrorist designations

Honduras is facing heightened security challenges following the official designation of MS-13, Pandilla 18, and Cartel del Diablo as terrorist organizations. This legal shift has introduced a more restrictive penitentiary regime, which is currently facing a constitutional challenge by legal advocates arguing that the law violates human dignity and non-discrimination rights.

Law enforcement authorities have reported several developments related to these groups. The National Police are investigating the infiltration of criminal structures in road blockades and have warned that gang members may attempt to use migrant caravans to flee the country and evade justice. In a recent operation in Chamelecón, authorities apprehended two suspected Pandilla 18 members, including a minor, seizing an AR-15 rifle and narcotics.

In a related incident, a Honduran national was detained by Mexican authorities in Chiapas. He is accused of being an organizer of the ‘Fe y Esperanza con Dios’ migrant caravan, though caravan members dispute the charges, claiming he is a migrant assisting others. Meanwhile, the Honduran military has deployed 192 personnel to provide security and rescue services during the Morazánico holiday, and the government is navigating legal hurdles regarding the potential purchase of a functioning hospital to alleviate pressure on the Hospital Escuela.
